 Trust Nye

I disagree with John Carvel's belief that Nye Bevan would have disapproved of NHS foundation trusts (Patients as guests, payment by results - it's the new NHS, April 1).

It is true that Nye said "the sound of a bedpan dropped in a distant hospital should reverberate through Whitehall". But he also said: "One of the great dangers of a government health service is overcentralisation, and the wider the decentralisation we can bring about, the better for everybody."

Nye Bevan would have supported hospitals run by staff and patients and free of Whitehall micromanagement - precisely the aim of NHS foundation trusts.
John Reid MP
Secretary of state for health
