 We don't like ATM charges

This week's raised eyebrows are directed at Halifax for increasing the interest rate on credit card ATM transactions when they were already high.

The interest charged on a withdrawal has gone up from 22.5% to 23.5%, news that is unlikely to be welcomed by anyone other than bean counters at the bank.

A Moneysupermakerket spokesman says: "If you are thinking, how can a rise be justified on an already high rate of interest when the base rate hasn't moved up in years I'd have to say 'good question'."

And there's another factor to bear in mind. Like many providers, Halifax's cards apply a "payment hierarchy" that clears the lowest interest bearing debt first. So, if you don't pay your bill in full, you will be paying interest on the ATM withdrawals longest.
