We like consistently good rates

Recent research from Intelligent Finance, the internet arm of the Halifax, claims that consistently high rates on savings accounts are a scarce commodity.

Headline-grabbing rates in the best buy tables rarely last the course. If the top 10 direct access accounts are tracked over the past three years, only Alliance & Leicester and Intelligent Finance accounts remain consistently competitive over the years.

IF's account had only dropped 1% in that period. Alliance & Leicester's dropped by 1.4%. Both accounts still pay a good rate for savers. IF's account paid a rate of 5.0% in November 2000.

It currently pays a rate of 4.0%. Alliance & Leicester paid a rate of 5.5% and now pays 4.1%
