Strategic Negotiator - Network Focus, Global Infrastructure - Mountain View

This position is based in Mountain View, CA.

Google is looking for individuals with enthusiasm, a drive to learn new technologies, and experience in both the business and technical realm to become Strategic Negotiators for the Global Infrastructure team.

The Global Infrastructure team is responsible for the strategy, acquisition, implementation, and maintenance of relationships with strategic suppliers and partners to expand and grow Google?s operational presence on a worldwide basis.
This includes finding optimal solutions to Google?s ongoing needs for data center capacity; working closely with network carriers to obtain capacity for expansion and growth of both Google?s global backbone and Google?s voice capabilities; and meeting the operational sourcing requirements for new products, services, and initiatives prior to launch. By applying a unique blend of business and technology experience, our team works closely with both outside parties and internal teams to find creative, cost effective, and often unusual solutions to meet Google?s ongoing growth and expansion needs in North America and around the world.

The Strategic Negotiators are the individuals on the front lines finding creative solutions to problems, working with vendors, suppliers, and internal teams to meet Google?s expansion needs, and negotiating both the commercial terms and the legal contracts for products, services, and acquisitions on behalf of Google. These individuals embody the unique combination of business and technical sense, are professionals who are equally well versed calculating financial models on the fly at a dinner table or drawing creative technical solutions on a white board in a room with vendor representatives, who come to the table with existing knowledge and experience working with vendors, suppliers, and partners in their area of expertise.

Strategic Negotiators with a Network Focus will be responsible for helping to grow and expand Google?s global backbone network through acquisition of layer- 1, layer-2, and layer-3 solutions to meet ongoing commercial and technical needs. This includes some combination of sourcing metro and/or long haul dark fiber solutions; identifying and contracting for circuits and/or wavelengths on either terrestrial or undersea paths to augment Google?s backbone capacity; working closely with tier-1 providers to ensure that proper IP peering and/or transit arrangements are in place; and watching emerging network technologies, industrial trends, and internal developments for opportunities to enhance Google?s network capabilities. Individuals with extensive experience in North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and/or other global markets are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:
Become the lead point of contact for sourcing network requirements in one or more geographies and one or more areas of technical expertise (layer-1, layer-2, and/or layer-3) to meet Google?s ongoing network expansion and growth requirements.
Work with internal business and technical teams as well as senior management to identify and define new projects and initiatives necessary to meet Google's ongoing needs for both expansion and cost reduction.
Design and architect technical solutions, negotiate commercial terms with suppliers, spearhead the legal contract review process, and ensure the proper delivery of services and/or solutions.
Manage the commercial relationship with a number of vendors, identify unique opportunities for partnership or expansion with these vendors, and work with the vendors to find mutually beneficial solutions to meeting Google?s requirements.
Continually learn and develop both commercial and technical understanding of multiple areas of expertise; become the expert on one or more technologies and/or commercial areas within the group and provide training to other team members.
Requirements:
In depth technical knowledge in major areas of data transmission technology including but not limited to dark fiber, DWDM, network node collocation, local loops, circuits (SONET or SDH), wavelengths (2.5G and 10G), IP transit, IP peering, and/or 802.11.
Extensive experience working for or with major network carriers in one or more regions of the world; knowledge of IP backbone designs, carrier deployed network gear, terrestrial fiber routes, and undersea cable routes and backhaul routes; a strong understanding of service level agreements for layer- 1, layer-2, and/or layer-3 data services.
A BS or BA degree in a technical discipline from a top flight university; graduate-level education or equivalent experience preferred.
Three to five years relevant industry experience for mid-level positions; five to ten years relevant industry experience for senior-level positions.
Strong analytical skills and problem solving skills; able to evaluate a situation quickly and accurately to determine the best strategy moving forward.
A strong sense of both intelligence and intellect; an ability to juggle dozens of priorities and projects simultaneously.
Experience and knowledge working in both North America and international markets preferred.
An ability to learn new business and technical skills quickly, to adapt to changing environments, to be able to pick up new areas of expertise as Google?s needs and requirements evolve.
An outstanding outside the box thinker who can come up with creative solutions either commercial or technical in nature to meet or exceed technical, timeline, and cost requirements.
An individual with a strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communications skills, and an ability to work in an Internet-focused environment.
An individual who is comfortable working independently and thinking on the fly while still coordinating and synchronizing efforts with other members of the Global Infrastructure team and with internal customers within Google.
Someone with a natural knack for negotiations, who can find the best possible price with the best possible technical solution, who can work with sincerity and diligence to build long term mutually beneficial relationships with Google?s vendors.
For immediate consideration, please apply HERE.
