Assoc Managing Editor
Description: Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information for professionals and students in medicine, nursing, allied health, pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry, is seeking an Associate Managing Editor (AME) within the Medical Language & Reference (MLR) department of the Health Professions division.
Under the direction of the Senior Managing Editor, the Associate Managing Editor is responsible for managing all phases of planning and development for the publication of end user products (both print and electronic). This individual ensures that the scope of the product is met, and that the timeliness and quality of the finished product are within budgeted parameters. This is achieved by working closely with authors, editors, subject matter expert(s), freelancers, organizational representatives, contributors, developers, vendors, in-house and external software development personnel, sales and marketing, fulfillment, and manufacturing regarding the preparation, scheduling, design, production, launch, marketing, and publication of products. Specific products include educational textbooks and ancillaries, professional references (print and electronic), authored and managed content, and others.
In addition to managing content and product development, the AME will be responsible for:
o Leading and managing select projects (not necessarily product-related) as designated by the Senior Managing Editor and/or Publisher of Medical Language & Reference. Projects may be directed internally (processes and procedures) or externally (market research, focus groups).
o Assisting and providing support to Senior Managing Editor and/or Publisher as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
o Manage content development and delivery for multi-component projects for print, electronic, and web-based publication.
o Assist in development of cost estimates and development schedules for product proposal process.
o Recruit freelancers as applicable; prepare appropriate contracts and work for hire agreements for freelance staff; process and track payments.
o Coordinate efforts of authors, editors and freelancers to deliver content on time, to budgeted specifications, and to fit market needs.
o Prepare and coordinate quality assurance (QA) reviews. Enlist consultants and/or in-house staff to check front matter, internal design, cover, chapter content, etc., to eliminate inconsistencies and errors.
o Oversee quality control measures for content and product scope; communicate changes to team members and key stakeholders.
o Communicate project activities and schedules via status reports and MLR team meetings.
o Maintain appropriate records/reports; ensure that history of project is properly tracked and reported.
o Complete projects with close-out documentation including final budget, final publication date and lessons-learned.
o Assist in development of market research efforts and analysis, as needed.
o Refine and maintain guides and instructions for style, format, and process, as necessary, to improve both quality and efficiency of products and department operations.
o Work directly with manuscripts, including checking them for completeness and preparing them for composition.
o Manage designers in the development of internal, cover, and packaging design. Prepare sample pages and design elements for internal design development.
o Work with Senior Managing Editor and/or other designated staff to resolve product issues as needed.
o Work with Customer Service, Technical Support, and Sales staff as needed to relay product information and support sales efforts.
o Work with Production staff as needed on any required packaging or assembly changes.
o Travel as needed to professional meetings to represent LWW; meet content providers and vendors; initiate, build, and maintain good customer relationships; survey the competition.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
o College degree required.
o Two or more years prior publishing/editorial experience preferred.
o Computer literacy required.

o Strong organizational skills.
o Experience with databases and database publishing preferred.
o Excellent project management skills, including effective time and resource utilization.
