The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is in the process of relocating a substantial portion of its business to Durham, NC.  Join us in our new facility as a Copy Editor for the Journal of Accountancy, and help us grow.

ResponsibilitiesCopy edit features, columns, graphics for style, grammar, spelling, consistency for monthly publication in the Journal of Accountancy (JofA); Provide written and oral feedback on manuscripts to senior developmental editors and serve as a resource for style, formatting, and grammar issues; Ensure that all of the components of a good JofA article are present in feature manuscripts (based on the writer's checklist and author's agreement); review manuscript in terms of the stated mission; Examine backup on each article to see that technical reviews are included with the manuscript and that the author has addressed concerns; Ensure that editors have followed through on notifying involved staff of article acceptance with contact for author's agreement; Serve as "quality control" for the magazine content (e.g., scrutinize each page, especially in the final manuscript stage for sensitive issues for CPAs and for the AICPA, check for inconsistencies in fact and style, as well as grammatical and spelling errors); Make sure that final draft of manuscript has photo captions and pull quotes, as well as resource boxes and practical tips; Verify information that seems questionable by checking provided backup, querying editor or author, etc.; Fill in for managing editor when needed in monitoring workflow and tracking stories. Assist in seeing that articles are on time and in sync with the agreed-upon editorial "calendar"; Provide some original content as needed, especially for checklists and graphics, write-up of survey results for TopLine section, occasional interviews possible; Work with Art Director and managing editor to close the monthly issue by paginating all listed items based on Art Department's "page plan" and laid-out articles. Paginate table of contents and In This Issue section and cross-check.  Double check titles over all items in case there were changes in pages; Sense-read pages of each article at issue closing. Verify the format and style are correct and consistent with the overall design of the magazine. Check cross-references within article.

Requirements5 years copy-editing experience on business publications, preferably magazine or journal experience; Extensive knowledge of English grammar, usage, and spelling; Degree in English language or literature and/or business; Internet research skills, basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; Ability to communicate well with others and work well as part of a team as well as on your own; Knowledge of accounting preferred.
