Qualifications
Science and Technology Professional Books group has an exciting opportunity for a Book Designer for its Burlington, Massachusetts site. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing S&T interiors, some covers, while commissioning art from freelance designers and illustrators. This position also liaisons with editorial for art program pre-flighting, in-production art correction or redraw and also consults and trains with project management staff.

The Book Designer advises on the design development on projects assigned while considering appropriateness for product, market, quality level, cost and publishing schedule. Manages individual workload through discussion with editorial colleagues and the Design Manager; ensures that publishing schedules are met on time. Also maintains the Design Unit register of freelance designers, provides imagery (cover, text, graphics) in a form suitable for use in promoting products. Sets appropriate quality standards for design competence and the technical preparation of electronic files. Selects and purchases images from photo libraries and commissions freelance illustrators when appropriate as part of a cover or interior design

Technical Competencies:
*Highly competent knowledge and design skill with typography, information design and the design needs of different types of publishing products
*Demonstrated expertise in Adobe CS2 Suite and OSX; InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark, MS Office
*Current prepress requirements and standards for electronic products
*Computer and file system management

Qualifications
*B. A. or B. S. in Design
*3+ years practical experience as a Designer within a publishing environment.
*Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including competencies in art direction and composition specifications
*Thorough, meticulous administrative and tracking skills
*Ability to work under pressure on a high volume of projects with continually changing priorities
