Development Director

Job Description: Staff Management responsibilities:
Manages in-house editorial staff by monitoring workloads
Makes work assignments, and defines staffing needs
Manage freelance budget, including projections/forecasts and tracking
Hires new DEs as needed.
Determine optimal organization for softside or hardside group, assigning more experienced DEs to supervise and train less experienced editors.
Conducts performance reviews with in-house editorial staff and sets goals for them.
Participates in budget planning and monitors contract budgets, revising when necessary.Provides training and ensures standard business guidelines are followed:
Supervises a group of DEs charged with organizing and running DE training
Provides occasional group and one-on-one training, as needed to supplement group’s efforts
Creates guidelines and tools that will help familiarize new editors with the development process
Defines and establish new processes to improve manuscript developmentList Management
Identifies programs in danger of delay and works with editorial team to find solutions to save or make decision to delay.
Keeps publisher apprised of programs that are resource drains and makes recommendations for cancellation or resource allocations as needed

Contributes to Program Planning, including the development of Discipline Plans, Pub Plans and Program Plans.  Also encourage leveraging learning from prior programs and the adoption of Best Practices

Job Requirements:

Ability to lead a group of editors by helping them to focus on strategically important tasks
Ability to manage group’s work according to Divisional business priorities
Strong verbal and written communication skills
