Technical Writer, Software Platform Engineering - Mountain View

This position is based in Mountain View, CA.

Google's platform engineering group is looking for a very experienced senior Technical Writer who can take the lead in documenting our platform-development procedures, technology, and software. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with both hardware and software systems with an emphasis on software, will be skillful at capturing requirements, and will take complete responsibility for planning, researching, and writing the documents that need to be produced, as well as providing overall structure to the documentation set.

Responsibilities:
Write documents that capture low-level software requirements and describe internally developed technologies.
Organize Google's internal documentation and make it accessible and useful to everyone at Google.
Organize existing documents, identify documentation holes and spearhead efforts to fill them in.
Edit, clarify and proofread documents written by engineers.
Obtain information by interviewing Google staff.
Work with management to identify and prioritize needed documents.
Coach engineers on ways to improve their writing skills.
Requirements:

BA or BS plus 10 years of experience, or MA/MS/PhD, plus 5 years of experience.
Proven self-starter.
Proven track record of researching and writing the very best software and/or hardware-related documentation.
Able to cope with fast-paced and constantly changing environments.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Passionate about learning and documenting new technologies.
Strong level of knowledge in one or more software topics such as BIOS programming, Unix/Linux kernels, unit test frameworks, disk storage subsystems and device drivers, TCP/IP and network programming, or other software-related technologies.
Ability to read and understand C, C++, Python or Java source code.
Ability to quickly develop rapport with engineers.
Ability to understand technology, demonstrated either by having earned an engineering degree, by having been employed as an engineer for 3+ years, or by having successfully written about engineering and technology for 5+ years.
