Description

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is in the process of relocating a substantial portion of its business to Durham, NC.  Join us in our new facility as the Manager of Composition Services, and help us grow. This position involves managing the day-to-day operation of the composition services function including the direct supervision of 4 Desktop Publishing Operators and 3 Production Associates, a part-time proofreader, offshore XML service bureaus, and others who handle overflow.

ResponsibilitiesManage 7 full-time staff (and others), including creating a training and development plan to enable staff to stay current with changes in publishing related software and processes; Acquire and maintain all software and hardware required to process the workload, including, but not limited to, Quark 6.5, Adobe Professional Suite 7.0, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, FrontPage, and Conversion Plus (all are Windows, not MAC based); Actively participate in the decision-process, and possible subsequent setup of an in-house composition system; Oversee the page composition by off-shore service bureaus of publications from xml source files; Ensure that staff follows all established ISO 9001 checklists and guidelines, that forms are signed, and logs maintained for ready reference at time of  ISO audit; Ensure that all work leaving the team contains a routing log or pre-flight record that lists all applications, fonts, and images used to create the PDF print master file for the printer; Interface directly with IT staff and/or external service bureau contact to access any software/hardware issues that may arise and assure quick resolution so that schedules may be maintained; Work closely with the Production Manager to ensure that daily priorities are set for the team; pitch in where needed to assist the team in meeting them.

RequirementsBachelor?s degree in English, Graphic Arts, or IT; 5 years minimum experience managing either corporate or commercial fast-paced composition services environment; 5 years minimum experience in the direct supervision and training of graphic arts staff; 3 years minimum experience in training, developing, and direct supervision of full-time staff; Experience in ISO 9001 environment desired; Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite of applications including PowerPoint; Proven leadership skills and ability to set priorities, meet many daily deadlines, and work well under pressure; Experience managing traditional desktop as well as xml and web workflows; Hands-on experience managing the operation of robust page composition systems such as XPP; Experience processing large page count, highly technical material from final xml files supplied by content managers; Understanding of the relationship between a schema, xls file, CALs table model, and the interface with composition engines; Hands-on experience with all of the latest graphic arts programs used in today's industry to produce newsletters and text/tabular book formats; 2-color and 4-color process knowledge; Web content experience to facilitate the repurposing of print publications to an online format; Proven leadership skills; IT background a plus; ISO 9001 process owner experience a plus; Willing to work overtime, when necessary, to meet deadlines.
