Six Sigma: Managing Editor, iSixSigma Magazine
iSixSigma Magazine, the premier print magazine devoted to Six Sigma and business improvement, is seeking an experienced, dynamic managing editor to take over the day-to-day operation of the editorial side of the bi-monthly publication. Joining the magazine as it is completing its second year of publication, the managing editor will find an exciting time growing the magazine and solidifying the magazine's position as the top source for Six Sigma information. The magazine delivers strategies, insights, profiles, methodologies and benchmarking relative to Six Sigma issues, and at the same time covers a broad range of management topics such as accelerating change, improving leadership and linking strategy to business objectives. The position will be based out of the successful candidate's home office.
Responsibilities
Ensure relevant and timely coverage of the most important topics in Six Sigma and business improvement by keeping current with industry developments and monitoring competitors, competitors' customers and suppliers. Work with publisher, editor-in-chief and the editorial team to help shape a long-term vision of the magazine and help set a course for making that vision reality. Oversee the magazine's editorial and design staff, including employees, those under contract and freelancers. Oversight includes directing staff activities, setting and enforcing deadlines, assigning articles, helping secure interviewees, recruiting peer reviewers and freelancers, maintaining a style guide, and promoting high standards of writing and journalistic integrity. Edit all written material for publication, including articles, features, columns and special projects. Coordinate the production of the magazine with the art director and the printing contractor. Coordination includes creating schedules, enforcing deadlines, deciding on general layout of each issue, reviewing use of graphic elements and design of page layouts, proofing final "bluelines," submitting corrections and issuing final approval to print. Write a column for each issue of the magazine. Be involved in public affairs related to iSixSigma Magazine, via such activities as establishing an editorial board, speaking at conferences or business meetings, and supporting iSixSigma special projects or events.
Competencies/Qualities Required
Education: bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications or related field. Five or more years of professional editorial experience, preferably on a business-to-business publication, magazine or newspaper. Excellent communication skills as a writer and as a speaker. Superior organizational and time-management skills. Unquestionable integrity. High-energy self-starter with strong work ethic and positive attitude. Minimal supervision required. Aptitude for building and maintaining strong working relationships. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and thrive under the pressure of deadlines. Creative enough to envision the future, yet pragmatic enough to implement that vision. Dedication to intelligent journalism and outstanding writing. Excellent computer skills, including use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Power Point, Excel, and preferably Minitab. Desire to work from home office and the ability to travel periodically.
Preferred but Not Required
Formal Six Sigma training. Experience with a Fortune 500 corporation.
Job Location
Headquarters for iSixSigma Magazine is Bainbridge Island, Washington. Applicants should live in the Seattle metropolitan area, or be willing to relocate there at their expense.
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $40,000 to $55,000 per year, depending on experience.
