Our retail grocery chain with over 40 years of family ownership is looking to start the interview process for an OUTSTANDING Assistant Buyer.We are a chain of 126 retail stores in 6 Western States specializing in the purchase of closeouts and excess inventories.The position is in the Dry Grocery Department which 

encompasses 50% of our total sales volume.  Of this volume, this position would be reporting to the Dry Grocery Buyer responsible for almost 30% of department purchases.  We are looking for someone with the potential, ability, and desire to grow into an Associate Buyer position over the next 5 years.  The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills, along with spotless credentials in excel spreadsheets, and a desire to grow with a dynamic company.  This candidate would work here in Berkeley at our corporate office and would require very little travel other than to Sacramento once every 3 months to work with our warehouse personnel and visiting local stores here in the Bay Area maybe once per month with another buyer.The position offers medical, dental, and vision benefits starting after 30 days to 6 months, and profit sharing after one year which has a 7 year vesting.  The position is an advanced position in purchasing, so it is not entry level.

Job Title:   Assistant Buyer I

SUMMARY

  Work with Buyer, Director and/or Vice President in all facets of the purchases by

  performing the following duties and performing additional duties as assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Maintain good relationship with vendors and stores, including correspondence where appropriate.

- Responsible for researching prices, movements, quantities, retails and margins.

- Responsible for direct store shipments. 

- Work independently, after immediate supervisor's direction, with the majority of the buyer's category

suppliers making decisions on product purchases, within parameters as set by immediate supervisor.

-Support buyer category management plans with item movement, margin, etc tracking of specified 

products, ad item distribution.

-Responsible for initiating yellows and pinks and ensuring the problem is resolved.

- Manage a class or subclass with parameters provided by immediate supervisor including buying

for the category sourcing of new vendors, category management, etc.

-  Visit stores/vendors as approved by immediate supervisor.

-  Provide articles to Grocery Outlet Inc. on a bimonthly basis.

-  Act for the buyer in his/her absence.

-  Perform other duties as assigned including Assistant Buyer III and II functions as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Highly organized and productive

- Does very accurate work

- Excellent communication skills- oral and written

- Enthusiastic attitude that enjoys working

- Independent worker with strong analytical and decision making skills

- B.A. Degree or one to two years related experience and /or training: or equivalent combination of

  education and experience.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Five years experience in Retail- Grocery

- Three years experience in Purchasing/Buying

- Excellent computer skills, ie Excel spread sheets, AS400 and IBM/POS system

- Proven Analytical and Communication Skills.  Ability to read, analyze and interpret general

  business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures of governmental regulations. 

  Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedural manuals.  Ability to

  effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients,

  customers and the general public.

- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, 

percentages, area, circumference and volume.  Strong math skills.

- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations

where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished

in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.  Common sense and good judgment.
