Data Communications Technician

* Participates in data network change projects by installing and testing various communications equipment and services to specified configurations and insures proper working order for new or updated network services.
* Must have a strong sense of customer service and problem ownership.
* Controls assigned inventory of data communications and test equipment.
* Travels via air or ground transportation to customer sites within the region to install, upgrade or repair customer equipment. May also be required to travel for training.
* Completes service reports to document work performed.
* Troubleshoots network hardware in isolate and determine most efficient method to correct a variety of communication equipment or service failures using test equipment, monitoring an diagnostic tools.
* Corrects a variety of failures to promptly restore network service by replacing failed hardware to circuit board level. Escalates problems beyond ability to promptly correct to supervisor or network analyst.
* Initiates and monitors vendor maintenance on telecommunication services necessary to restore or maintain network operations.
* Maintains network equipment and services to assure working order and demand availability by performing scheduled, routine on-line tests of communication services.  Takes corrective action by checking, adjusting or replacing equipment to resume established operational standards.
* Must be willing to work overtime as required and support the weekend maintenance windows as required.  Will be required to share the monthly rotating on-call duties

Physical Requirements:

* Must be able to lift a minimum of 70 pounds without assistance.
* Must be able to climb a ladder to height of at least twenty feet.
* Must be able to work safely with basic hand tools and test equipment
* Must be able to work around high-frequency electronic equipment.
* Must not be color blind
* Must wear appropriate safety gear as required

Required Education, Training, Skills and Experience:

* General knowledge of basic communications theory and associated hardware.
* Must have excellent P.C. skills, proficient with Word, Excel, Visio and Aperture
* Able to maintain and input configuration of specified data communication processors, routers, multiplexers, DSUs, modems, lines, and related equipment.
* Able to apply test equipment, diagnostic programs including programmable data scopes and equipment provided stats.
* Able to interpret schematic drawings of basic electronic circuits.
* Skilled in fault isolation techniques.
* Associate degree in electronics, computer or communications technology AND three years experience installing and maintaining data communication equipment.
* Two years experience installing and maintaining data communications equipment.
* An equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Desired Skills and Experience:

* Knowledge of data communications network operation.
* Knowledge of specified data communication protocols and standards such as ASCII, EBDCIC, CCITT X25, and SNA/SDLC frame relay and TCPIP.
* Must be a team player, and available for overtime.
* Able to work with little supervision.
