Data Engineer I

Description: Responsible for the design, testing, engineering and operations of data networks to support ATM and transparent LAN services, Managed Networks, Internet Service Provider business.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Engineer the data networks for 99.999% Reliability.

Grow the data businesses to support increased capacity demands and to offer new features or services.

Monitor and maintain capacity of network with provisions for future growth.

Evaluate, select and negotiate procurement for data networking equipment.

Evaluate partnerships that might supplement or create new data businesses. Maintain strategic partnerships with other ISPs and Network Integrators.

Provide competitive business analysis and information as possible to enable revenue opportunities.

Ability to develop and document network quality standards for future implementation and duplication. Author methods and procedures for engineering projects. Review methods and procedures for technician work orders and projects. Create Circuit Layout Records to accurately document all circuit components, contacts, and complete design information.

Evaluate, engineer, and implement network management capabilities, both software and hardware including Operations Support Systems for engineering, capacity analysis, surveillance, and simulation.

Design long-term engineering records. Provide detailed methods and procedures for data network upgrades and customer circuit activation.

Evaluate and standardize test equipment and methods.

Ensure accurate records and record keeping systems.

Streamline costs and procedures of existing products to make rollout more efficient and less expensive.

Support marketing in proposals, sales calls and presentations. Provide detailed solution costs to marketing for return on investment analysis

Support Cox Communications in the roll out of data services through training and effective communications and teamwork with other departments including Customer Service, Marketing, Sales, Accounting, Asset Management, as well as the other Engineering and Operations groups for SONET, Access and IMACS, Switching, Construction and Fiber Engineering.

Provide technical support on-call and during business hours for Cox Business Services and Cox Residential Services technicians in the delivery and repair of all data services.

Inventory control, management and procurement.

Serve as technical lead to data techs, provides training to data techs, interns and other departments.

Provide technical support on-call and during business hours for Cox Business Services and Cox Residential Services technicians in the delivery and repair of all data services.

Work with legal and regulatory departments to properly protect and position data services.

Design solutions for responses to RFPs for data networking solutions.

Maintain Technical Expertise for one of the engineering specialization areas:

ATM: PNNI and H-PNNI; DLE, MPLS

ISP: BGP, DNS, Caching, Mail and News

Network Integration: Routed and Switched network design skills, advanced routing and switching


QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES:

BS Engineering, Networking, Computer Science/Information Science (or equivalent combination of education & experience- Associates in field 1-2 years related experience or no degree in field 3 years of related experience).

Knowledge of data network protocols, and topologies, and routing principles, network management, SONET, and security issues. Specifically, knowledge of at least 3 relevant network technologies such as Ethernet, token ring, ATM, FDDI, Fast Ethernet, Gig Ethernet, frame relay, packet over Sonet.

Previous LAN/WAN networking experience, including hardware components understanding (router, switch, hub, cabling.)

Unix operating system and Unix administration preferred.

Experience with Unix shell scripting, C, and/or Perl programming preferred.
