Field Engineer - Phoenix, AZ

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility will be the commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting of optical transmission systems within the fiber optic network with occasional travel within the Western United States. This individual must have experience and proficiency with wave systems such as Nortel Optera, as well as, Cisco GIG-E and ME Systems. Extensive experience troubleshooting and handling optical fiber components within the network and on third party lease agreements(including the use of optical testing equipment such as OTDR, power tester, light meter) is desired. Performs various day-to-day functions associated with regional telecommunications operations. Will share in the rotation of after hours emergency On-Call response schedule and must be willing to work after regular office hours, on weekends and holidays on an as needed basis. Additional responsibilites are assisting the field operations team with OSP functions such as cable locates, one-call response, hardware maintenance, site maintenance and cleaning, and new location surveys for AboveNet regional operations activities. Required to assist the local field operations anytime in case of emergency restoration or customer circuit troubleshooting.

Responsiblities:

A. Pre-operational *Responsible for commissioning, troubleshooting and handling optical transmission systems; Assist the AboveNet Engineering Department with network construction activities and required Fiber Engineering paperwork including but not limited to Route forms, Splice Engineering packages, RedLines and As Builts.

*Perform cable locates and protect AboveNet's cable plant. Participate in local On Call schedule rotation work on weekends at night and holidays.

*Provide preliminary site surveys for building entrance construction requirements and equipment space availability;

*Responsible for installation and testing of fiber optic patch cords.

B. Post Operational - responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance of optical transmission systems;

*Responsible for testing, monitoring, troubleshooting and handling all components of the AboveNet Network. Inside Plant and Outside Plant included;

*Responsible for site preventative maintenance practices;

*Participating in OSP plant protection practices;

*Montior contractor, vendor and customer co-location requirements;

*Provide daily status reports to Operations Manager;

*Other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager to insure the orderly operation of AboveNet.

Job Requirements:

Proficient with Sonet, WDM and DWDM transmission equipment, transmission network alarm and surveillance systems. Working knowledge of standard MS Outlook products; Vision, MS Outlook, MapPoint and CAD. Able to understand and read construciton plans. Background in the Operations and Maintenance of transmission networks and familiarity with the following desired: underground and aerial fiber optic cable networks, Lucent LGX fiber distribution and test system, Generators, AC and DC power plants, OTDR and Power Meter test equi9pment and fusion splice machines. Able to drive extensively and operate a company vehicle, and responsible for maintenance and care. Required to safeguard high value testing and production equipment. Military or technical training in associated discipline or equivalent experieance. Minimum of two(2) years training or experience in the operation of transmission networks. Knowledge in technical disciplines as associated with operations in the inside and outside plant environment. Minimum of two(2) years training or experience in the operation of operations in the inside and outside plant evnironment. Experience with fiber optic cable testing, splicing or provisioning.
