Producer - News 14 Greensboro

PURPOSE:  Responsible for producing assigned newscast and field producing sports and news stories under the direction of the executive producer.



 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.   Builds the news wheel with live and taped news weather and traffic elements that meet format requirements, within established deadlines.  Coordinates with graphic artist in developing graphics for the show.  Writes stories that are clear, concise and conversational for anchors as required.

2.   Produces assigned live newscasts and sports shows, news wheels and news inserts making decisions on story lineup, video/audio, graphics, and timing to construct the show.  Produces and writes special reports as directed by the Executive Producer or News Manager.  Works with producers, reporters, directors and assignment editor to create the newscasts.  Responsible for accuracy, fairness and balance of content in on-air product.

3.   Field produces content, including shooting, editing and writing news stories. Appears on air as directed by the Executive Producer or News Director.

4.   Researches news and sports publications, websites and programming for story updates and ideas.  Brings story ideas to daily editorial meetings.  Responsible for up-to-date knowledge of news, sports and events in local market, nation and world.

5.    Will perform other duties as assigned.

 

DECISION MAKING:  Partners in coverage decision during breaking news.  Exercises excellent news judgment by selecting content and stories that reflect needs of the market.  Assigns reporters to stories.



 

JOB DIMENSIONS:  Stays current on all legal, ethical and operational guidelines for on-air product.

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Works closely with the director, audio operators, master control operators, anchors, and reporters when producing the news product. 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Proven track record of strong interpersonal and organizational skills.  Excellent written and oral communication skills, good news judgment, ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines.  Must be organized and have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Must work effectively and efficiently under deadlines.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION: College Degree in English, Journalism or Communications

 

REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE:  1 year of experience in a television news environment, including producing live newscasts or newscasts in a 24-hr news environment. Must have experience shooting, writing and editing sports or news stories.



ESSENTIAL MENTAL FUNCTIONS: Good verbal and written communications skills, leadership skills.  Must have the ability to manage multiple task, prioritize and make decisions under time sensitive dealines.



WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS:  Works inside throughout the year although field production may require some work outside.  40 hour workweek, additional hours as required by special project or breaking news.

 



SPECIAL MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT USED: Various studio and remote broadcasting equipment (including but not limited to: portable camera, videotape recorders, edit suites, audio mixers, character generators, lights microphones, etc.)  Computers, telephones and scanners
