Sr. IP Engineer (2 Positions) - McLean, VA
Position Summary:
Architect, engineer, and operate AboveNet's global IP network. Study traffic utilization and make routing adjustments to optimize traffic flow. Resolve trouble tickets escalated by the IP Operations groups. Coordinate closely with IP Infrastructure on installation and scheduling of hardware associated with new sites, backbone connections and peering capacity.
Analyze network problems, requirements, and operation; make written and oral recommendations on network changes and expansion, including routing policy, network architecture, customer policies, new products, and equipment selection.
Responsibilites:
Network Engineering and Routing
Develop and publish standards for network configuration, including routing architecture, traffic engineering, configuration standards, inter- and intra-POP topology, peering policies, and guidelines for maintenance activities. Generate documentation for new technologies (e.g., MPLS-based VPNs) for use by Engineering and Operations.
Make ISIS, BGP, and MPLS changes to optimize traffic distribution.
Work with other internal groups to design, develop, and deploy new product offerings. Research new technologies and equipment, develop technical specifications for new products and services, and help draft service level guarantees. Manage peering connections with other networks. Negotiate with peers as to locations and speed of interconnections. Turn up new links to peer networks or Internet exchange points.
Deployment of New Sites/Devices/Additional Capacity
Work with IP Infrastructure and Provisioning groups to ensure that necessary equipment and capacity are ordered and installed in time to meet demand. Once new equipment has been installed, perform all necessary configuration to activate it in the network.
As demand warrants, work with Provisioning to order and turn-up additional capacity between IP hubs.
Troubleshooting and Support
Resolve problems escalated by IP Operations.
Resolve backbone-level problems reported by peers, including routing problems, network abuse issues, etc.
Work with vendors of IP backbone equipment to track problems, test new code releases, and guide new feature and product development.
Perform post-mortems on network incidents and issues, and make written recommendations for technical and policy improvements.
Analysis and Reporting
Analyze customer requirements, equipment capabilities, and staff and other resources to make written recommendations and oral presentations on product definitions, network architecture, customer policies, routing policy, and equipment selections.
Perform regression and performance testing of new code images and new hardware from IP router vendors. Certify software for deployment in the production IP backbone. Assist the IP Operations group with any upgrade issues IP Engineers are periodically required to be on-call to assist with network issues escalated by the IP Operations group.
Requirements:
Employee must have a 4-year bachelor?s degree or equivalent experience. A total of 5 to 8 years of industry experience is required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Must have a thorough understanding of BGP, ISIS, OSPF, and MPLS, and should be familiar with MPLS Traffic Engineering (TE) as well as VPN technologies such as L2VPNs (martini, kompella), RFC2547, and VPLS. Must be familiar with IP routing equipment from Cisco and Juniper. Must be able to diagnose and resolve routing issues, congestion problems, and hardware and software failures.
Experience with any of the following is highly desirable: ?UNIX systems (*BSD, Solaris, Linux), ?programming and scripting (C, Perl, SQL) ?optical transmission systems (Nortel, Lucent, Cisco, LuxN, etc.) ?electrical and optical circuit test equipment
IP Engineers are responsible for the planning and scheduling of circuit configuration and testing as well as equipment activation in concert with the IP Operations, IP Infrastructure, and Provisioning teams.
Employee must create and analyze routing configurations for backbone and customer requirements. Employee must analyze requirements from within the group, from other groups, and from outside the company and select appropriate physical, process, software, and routing implementations of those requirements. Employee is responsible for choosing between technical and process mechanisms for accomplishing tasks.
