Assistant/Associate Development Engineer

The University of California, Berkeley, is the preeminent public university in the country. We?re also one of the leading employers in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are currently seeking an Assistant/Associate Development Engineer.

 

The Institute of Transportation Studies/Technology Transfer Program is a $3+ million sponsored project at the University of California, Berkeley, providing technical assistance, training, and information services to professional transportation engineers and planners in California and around the world. The program facilitates exchanges and technology sharing between university researchers and practicing professionals to carry out its mission of supporting the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of efficient and effective state-of-the-art transportation systems. Sponsored activities occur throughout California and may also be offered outside California through distance learning technologies, including internet-based learning. Participants in the Technology Transfer Program sponsored events and programs are international and represent the full range of transportation interests. Funding for activities is derived from a combination of sponsored projects and participant fees. Major professional partners include university based faculty and researchers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the American Public Works Association, and the Transportation Research Board.

Reporting to the Principal Development Engineer (Manager of Instructional Development), the Assistant/Associate Development Engineer will provide professional and program support on specific projects. This is a career ladder position. Appointment to this position will be made at either the Assistant Development Engineer or Associate Development Engineer level, depending upon experience and skills. The Assistant Development Engineer is generally given less responsibility and has less independence than the Associate Development Engineer. The Associate Development Engineer, for example, will be called on to provide day-to-day management of individual programs/projects, including preparation and management of budgets, acting as the primary liaison with government agencies, instructors, and sponsors, and may need to supervise one or more program assistants. An Assistant Engineer will operate under closer supervision, will not have supervisory responsibilities, and will work and coordinate with other government agencies, instructors, and program sponsors, but will not be expected to act as a primary liaison.

 

Responsibilities:

?  Coordinate with and assist professional planners and engineers with development and revision of instructional content in all areas of transportation, including but not limited to planning, pavements, traffic engineering, safety, and compliance

?  Provide interdisciplinary research support for development of learning objectives and course work that meets clients needs

?  Assist with development and implementation of program evaluation methodologies, write reports of findings and coordinate and act as lead on revisions

?  Recruit and facilitate expert panel discussions to identify and define training needs and technical assistance approaches

?  Manage project budgets

?  Take lead on special projects, including but not limited to, developing and managing a peer-to-peer program providing targeted technical assistance for California state and local agency personnel on specific projects

?  Review Traffic Safety Evaluation project deliverables and work with expert evaluation teams to ensure quality outputs

?  Represent the Technology Transfer Program in meetings and conferences

?  Build partnerships with funding agencies and client groups

?  Develop new project ideas

?  Write occasional  newsletter articles and web content as appropriate

?  Develop and distribute training need surveys

?  Act as technical liaison for five part-time professional engineers and planners who function as ?LTAP Field Agents? and ?Circuit Riders? under the Federal Local Technical Assistance Program

?  Coordinate delivery of Technology Transfer Program?s curriculum of more than 20 on-request road shows on pavement and other public works related topics

?  Assist with development and implementation of individual work plans and budgets

?  Design and implement effective evaluation and feedback procedures

?  Research and disseminate information on innovations and technologies appropriate for dissemination to California local agencies via the field agents

 

Requirements:

?  A Bachelor?s in Transportation Engineering/Planning/Systems Operations and two years of relevant work experience (Assistant Engineer) or three years of experience (Associate Engineer)

?  A relevant Master?s is highly desirable and may be substituted for one year of field experience

?  Expressed interest and demonstrated understanding of technology transfer methods, transportation innovation, and adult learning strategies in a professional environment

?  Understanding of the work and operation of transportation institutions in California

?  Excellent English, written and verbal communication skills

?  Strong basic computer skills

?  Some statewide travel is required (typically 1-5 days per month). Note: this is NOT  transportation research

?  Operate with considerable independence at a full professional level under direction of a Principal Development Engineer or the Principal Investigator of a specific project

The annual salary for the Assistant Development Engineer position is $46,452-$65,448.

The annual salary for the Associate Development Engineer position is $56,244-$79,236.
