Combination Switcher/P & D Driver

Principal Duties:

This combination position primarily consists of yard switcher duties and when necessary, P & D duties.

Switchers principal duties include:

Moving trailers on terminal premises and are sitting inside the truck cab or are outside in all weather conditions throughout their shift.  Switchers frequently climb in and out of equipment and walk or stand on concrete surfaces.  They perform such tasks as hooking and unhooking trailers, connecting air hoses and electrical lines, fueling equipment, installing or removing tire chains, and manually cranking dolly wheels.  A Switcher is required to follow appropriate safety procedures. 

 

A switcher job is considered very heavy work.  Switchers frequently lift and carry objects weighing 50 pounds or more and may lift or move items in excess of 100 pounds.  They work out of doors in any weather and are subject to external conditions of temperature and wind.  Switchers may be exposed to petroleum based products such as oil, gasoline, and/or grease, during fueling or safety inspections.

 

P & D Driver?s principal duties include:

Pickup and Delivery Drivers obtain their daily assignments and inspect their loads and the equipment prior to leaving the facility.  P&D Drivers operate commercial motor vehicles in urban, suburban, and rural areas in all weather conditions to pickup and deliver freight.  The pickup and delivery of freight requires the loading and unloading of freight in varying conditions at both Company and customer facilities utilizing the same techniques and procedures as a dock worker.  P&D Drivers improve and update their professional skills on an ongoing basis.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Write and converse in English sufficiently to comprehend and follow safety rules, highway traffic signs and signals, and respond to official inquiries, to make entries on reports/records. Must be able to communicate with co-workers and the general public, have a satisfactory record of prior employment and be able to operate a forklift, pass a pre-employment physical examination, physical ability test, and drug screen. Must also have a current, valid CDL, Class A with endorsements for doubles and hazardous materials handling and must meet all other requirements specified by Federal Motor Carrier Regulations. A minimum of one-year verifiable driving experience or graduation from a state accredited driving program. There must be no record of license suspension or revocation as a result of a conviction while operating a motor vehicle and pass a physical ability test, DOT physical examination, and drug screen.

 

Preferred Requirements:

A high school diploma or an equivalent, two years driving experience in all weather conditions and awards for safe driving. Experience operating a forklift, working in a warehouse or transportation is a plus and also possession of a valid, current CDL.
