Director Fleet/ Outbound Transportation

The Toys R Us Supply Chain is considered a core competency of our business that gives us a competitive advantage in the market.  Within the Supply Chain, our private fleet provides both a cost and service advantage that many other retailers just can?t match. 

Toys R Us operates among the largest private fleets in the United States.  As our private fleet operates in a decentralized environment, the use of best practices across our network is key to ensuring a consistent high level of service to the stores.

The outbound transportation network is supported by private fleets domiciled at each of our 10 distribution centers and the use of 3rd party carriers (sub-haulers) for deliver beyond the range of the fleet.  The private fleet consists of 257 tractors, 2,110 trailers, 350 drivers and delivery accountability to 850+ stores, which support $8 billion in retail sales.  Overall budget responsibility for this position is $72 million.

 

The individual in this position is part of a cross-functional management team with a shared goal ?to bring our entire supply chain to a world-class level?. To ensure world-class performance, this individual must be able to effectively manage field level associates who report indirectly to this position as well as direct reports at corporate.

 

The Director, Fleet/Outbound Transportation will plan, organize and direct fleet/outbound transportation operational functions and strategies for the TRU/BRU logistics network. Responsibilities include P&L/budgeting, backhaul revenue, development of policies and procedures, KPI?s/reporting, systems strategy/development and asset management.

 

ESSENTIAL duties and responsibilities:

 1)  Manage P&L for outbound transportation and development of transportation budgets for each DC.

 2)  Develop and direct fleet revenue programs for collect, prepaid and 3rd party for hire opportunities to offset store delivery expense.

 3)  Establish KPI?s and measure fleet/ 3rd party performance to those standards. Implement continuous improvement plans and execute corrective action plans as required.

 4)  Effectively communicate with associates and customers (internal and external) to accomplish necessary objectives. Effectively review performance of direct and indirect reports; to ensure individuals and teams goals and objectives are achieved.

 5)  Develop and implement policies and best practices as they relate to driver safety, hiring, and accident identification.  In addition, direct company?s D.O.T. related requirements to ensure all companies procedures and policies confirm to government requirements as necessary.

 6)  Direct systems strategy and implementation as it relates to On-board computers, EDI and TMS/dispatch systems

 7)  Management of fleet asset/economic lifecycle programs to ensure assets produce optimal efficiency and are financed correctly.

 8) Strong communication and leadership skills. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of associates both internally and externally.  Project management and financial skills. Strong customer satisfaction orientation and strong analytical/technical skills.

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor?s degree in business or logistics. 10+ years both fleet and transportation operations experience with progressive leadership experience.  Experience successfully facilitating and implementing change. Demonstrated resilience. Experience working in a cross-functional matrix environment.
