Director, Logistics
General Summary
This position is responsible for the development and implementation of tactical and strategic alternatives that enhance Pacer Stacktrain?s network velocity, balance and contribution. This would include forecasting and monitoring network flows, balance and inventory levels, empty repositioning, surplus and deficit management and load center management. Cost benefit analysis of new business and new lanes, including the impact on network balance and load center contribution. Direct empty repositioning based on cost/benefit and network support. Provide regional input and direction to the centralized equipment reservation group, including allocation of capacity based upon balance, network contribution and strategic customer commitments.
Principal Responsibilities
? Equipment Velocity and Utilization? Manage equipment pool levels and develop alternatives jointly with Pricing and Sales to support surplus/deficit management response. Reduce empty container awaiting dispatch through network balancing strategies developed jointly with Pricing and Sales. Reduce awaiting dispatch days on empty repositioning. Principal measurements include regional surplus, awaiting dispatch days on loads and empty repos and loads per container per period. Manage regional equipment surpluses and deficits through proactive communication with Sales and Logistics colleagues, as well as prudent use of the empty repositioning mechanism.
? Empty Repositioning ? Minimize repositioning expense through management of network flows, identifying strategic priorities with Business Development/Pricing. Efforts are to reduce repositioning cost per load through network balance improvements, development of both short term and long term pricing strategies, potential new market/lane evaluations, and Revenue Empty Capacity Program. Principal measurements include regional empty repositioning cost per inbound load, total regional empty repositioning cost, and effective repositioning as measured by the ?subsequent load? in the load center context.
? Business Development ? Work closely with Sales and Pricing on new business development opportunities. Provide analysis and direction on profitable growth strategies and business development opportunities that support network improvement objectives. Provide target revenue levels that support acceptable economic hurdle criteria.
? Equipment Reservation ? Provide regional direction to Centralized Equipment Reservation group with respect to waitlist management and regional capacity conditions and customer/lane prioritization. Assist in development of web based reservation capabilities that will allow more effective control and reduce manual processes currently used to reserve equipment. Develop new processes around the system that will allow for the reduction of awaiting dispatch days and un-reserves as well as utilize data as a component of the forecasting process.
? Load Center Management ? Utilize the Load Center Management tool to drive improvements in network contribution levels. On an ongoing basis use the load center tools to identify both low and high contribution lanes. Develop strategy that will drive volume growth in more profitable load centers, as well as development of action plans to improve the contribution per day on low contribution load centers.
? ARC Capacity ? Manage the APL, as well as the non-APL ARC capacity program to increase volume and contribution. Identify alternative capacity in deficit locations and volume growth strategies with Sales and Pricing in locations where surplus ARC capacity supports incremental business growth.
? Assist in the preparation and development of the yearly volume budget.
? Coordinate with the Regional Equipment Director and Corporate Logistics and Equipment in the sizing of regional chassis pools, as well as the management process to efficiently allocate chassis assets throughout the network.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
? Minimum of 10 years experience in transportation industry with five years in Logistics Management.
? Minimum four years college education with concentration in Logistics or Business Management, or equivalent experience.
? Strong management, logistical, and communication skills.
? Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to calculate figures and amounts using basic functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as ability to calculate percentages and variances. Familiarity with business accounting fundamentals.
? Ability to interpret trends and market activity and translate that information into sound business decisions for the company. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
? Ability to work independently, and manage multiple tasks and disciplines.
? Proven PC experience, various software applications to include Word, Excel, email, Stacktrain mainframe applications (ICMS, RAS, ETC, WPM, GQL).
? Must be able to travel
