Student Bus Operator

 

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Operates Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) revenue vehicles (buses) in a safe, dependable, efficient, and on-time manner to provide transportation services for patrons.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Operates DART owned vehicles on prescribed routes as directed. Operates two-way bus radio system in accordance with DART established rules and regulations and the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Collects/records bus fares in accordance with DART procedures. Provides assistance to patrons as required. Answers route questions and announcements from patrons and general public. Prepares written reports as required. Works variable shifts as required.

 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note:  An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

 High school diploma or general education diploma (GED). Five (5) years experience in the operation of a motor vehicle to include one (1) year of operating a commercial motor vehicle (preferred) and one (1) year in a customer service environment. Valid Texas Commercial Driver?s License (CDL) to include passenger endorsement; no Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI on driving record, and not more than two (2) convictions of moving violations on driving record within the last thirty-six (36) months. Pass Department of Transportation (DOT) physical (medical) examination, which includes a drug screen in order to operate DART revenue vehicles. Incumbents are subject to the federal testing regulations of safety-sensitive positions, which include random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Ability to demonstrate a fiduciary obligation to section, division, department, and DART in handling materials and information of a confidential nature. Independent judgment to make decisions in the absence of guidance from others and to plan and carry out work assignments in situations where the procedures have been established. Interpersonal skills to effectively and sensitively communicate with all levels of supervisory and non-supervisory employees, patrons/customers, public, and others both inside and outside of DART; must be able to communicate in the English Language (orally and written). Ability to be ambulatory and almost constantly, 80% or more of work time, sit while operating bus. Physical ability to occasionally, 15% - 25% of work time, lift objects weighing 5 - 25 pounds such as schedules, files, clipboard, etc. Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours, and to be available for work on short notice. Operates DART revenue (bus) and non-revenue vehicles.
